Chemistry & Sensory Summer Intern

We have an opportunity for a Summer Intern join the R&D team based in San Diego, CA. The Summer Intern in Chemistry and Sensory will complete a wide variety of activities to support our research projects.  Firmenich provides unique learning opportunities for interns to manage independent projects with guidance from our research scientists and will report their findings at the conclusion of their 3-month term.

 

Internship to begin first week of June and goes through to the last week of August.  

The working hours are Monday – Friday (37.5 hours per week) 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Chemistry (6 weeks):
    • Assists chemists with synthesis and characterization of target compounds
    • Purifies compounds using a variety of techniques including chromatography, crystallization and HPLC
    • Prepares chemical solutions for assays, following standardized procedures
    • Analyzes results of high throughput screening data
    • Prepares and presents summaries of work for department meetings

 

  • Sensory science (6 weeks):
    • Trains new subjects for taste test panel participation
    • Designs taste tests for training new panelists
    • Prepares samples using analytical balances and dilutions
    • Executes sensory testing and collects data
    • Analyzes results and makes recommendations
    • Evaluates training progress and measures performance of new versus existing panelists

 

  • Other responsibilities:
    • Sample testing including density and pH measurements
    • Refines and works with SOP's
    • Adheres to all safety, scientific record keeping, and compliance requirements
    • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Pursuing a BS degree in Life Sciences preferred, including Chemistry, Food Science, Biology, or related science(s)
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office; ability to learn internal software programs.
  • Position is Full Time 40 hours/week. All hours must be worked on site at our San Diego laboratories and during normal business hours (8am-5pm)
  • Ideal candidate will be eager, energetic, reliable and self-motivated and ability to work independently.
