Principal Engineer- Capital Projects (New Ulm, MN)


We have an immediate opportunity for a Principal Engineer specialist to join the Firmenich Global Engineering team - America’s Region. The role will be initially based in our New Ulm, MN manufacturing site.  The Principal Engineer will provide support to Capital Construction Projects within the America’s region (NA/LAM). 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze long range plans, survey reports, maps, and other data to plan and design projects
  • Consider construction costs, government regulations, potential environmental hazards, and other factors during the planning and risk-analysis stages of a project
  • Compile and submit permit applications to local, state, and federal agencies, verifying that projects comply with various regulations
  • Oversee and analyze the results of soil testing to determine the adequacy and strength of foundations
  • With the assistance of technical purchasing, qualify outside engineering firms, develop RFP's, and evaluate bid proposals.
  • Participate in preparation of Pre-Conceptual, Basic & Detailed Engineering design packages of capital projects.
  • Conduct relevant project reviews with participation of key project team members; design, operability & maintainability, process hazards analysis, constructability.
  • Manage construction activities on the field at the site where project is being executed. Oversee subcontractors and vendors to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Monitor, control and report on construction project performance against project safety, quality, budget and schedule.
  • Evaluate and render recommendations on change order requests initiated by engineering, fabrication and construction contractors. Approve contractor’s invoices for payment.
  • Facilitate the Pre-Startup Safety Review and ensure necessary action items are completed in a timely manner.
  • Issue monthly project status reports following Global Engineering Guidelines.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the latest approaches and techniques for effective project/construction management.  Participate in creating/reviewing engineering standards.

  • BS degree in Engineering, Civil preferred
  • Graduate degree in Engineering, or Project Management is preferred
  • Approximately 12 years’ experience of demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in executing major construction capital projects, preferably in a chemical, and/or ingredients manufacturing environment
  • Prior experience with building construction management and installation of Spray Drying equipment
  • Knowledge of cGMP manufacturing practices
