Production Optimization Engineer | DRT America | R

OVERVIEW:

The Production Optimization Engineer will work within the Production Department to provide leadership and coordination in the design, installation, operation and automation of manufacturing process equipment.  He/she will provide technical assistance and will identify and implement chemical process improvements to improve safety & environmental compliance, quality, productivity, and cost. 

 

SUMMARY:

  • Provides daily plant technical support to Production Staff to meet the day-to-day manufacturing demand.
  • Assists in developing long-term strategy in continuous improvements around safety & environmental compliance, quality, productivity, and capacity and capital planning.
  • Investigates non-conformance quality, safety, and environmental events.
  • Provides coaching and feedback to production personnel.
  • Provides training assistance to production employees.
  • Provides technical direction and quality focus on meeting customer satisfaction.
  • Providing design to support engineering projects, including using PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) to facilitate equipment automation. Daily responsibilities include: Requirements documentation, detailed design generation, implementation, system integration, testing and on-site startup.
  • Supporting installation and upgrades of hardware and software, including PLC automation system program for and process control systems.
  • Supporting installation, start-up and commissioning.  Assisting with validation of the qualified equipment and systems.
  • Identifying and researching advancements in processes, equipment, software and hardware to support cost reductions and improve quality and efficiency.
  • Determining capabilities and limitations of process equipment in order to improve rating and efficiency
  • Improving product cost through productivity and efficiency improvements: yield, rate and uptime
  • Defining and implementing cost savings and improvement initiatives.
  • Participating in continuous improvement efforts, corrective action formulation, and root-cause investigations.
  • Working with equipment vendors and suppliers to recommend equipment improvements.
  • Preparing flow diagrams, P&ID's, equipment & instrumentation specifications, and mass & energy balances.
  • Working closely with Plant Management to diagnose, troubleshoot and improve processes
  • Act as backup for plant critical positions during PTO usage and for on-call response coverage
  • Domestic and foreign travel <10%
  • Good receipts, production and quality entry, and other duties as assigned


JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS in Chemical Engineering plus 6+ year’s relevant technical experience in a chemical manufacturing environment; OR 10+ year’s extensive broad-based technical experience in a Chemical Manufacturing Operation.
  • Process Safety Management (PSM), PHA and RCA experience.
  • Must be self-motivated and comfortable working independently as well as within a team environment.
  • Must be proficient in computer operation and basic programs (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, and SAP).
  • Communicate effectively and professionally (verbal, written). 
  • 5 years’ experience designing, modeling, operating and troubleshooting both batch and continuous process systems.
  • OSI PI and Chemcad modeling software knowledge
  • Knowledge of DCS Controls, Allen Bradley PLC’s, and SPC Statistical Process Control knowledge a plus
  • Ability to multi-task, work in a fast paced environment and set priorities

REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong working knowledge of engineering and manufacturing related practices applied to improve operation.
  • High degree of personal responsibility and initiative is required.  Must possess a high level of integrity as well as excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) and work with various departments. Self-motivated, team-player with good interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations & act courteous/respectful of others.
  • Must be able to maintain quality work performance with frequent distraction.
  • Must be 18 years or age with a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a post-offer pre-employment physical, drug screen and background check.


ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE:

The Production Optimization Engineer will report to the Plant Manager. He/she will work with various departments outside the Production and Engineering departments to set goals and action plans to achieve the departmental and corporate goals. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Frequent walking, standing, climbing, reaching at and above shoulders, pushing/pulling, twisting at waist, upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck; grasp and hand and arm strength to lift equipment;
  • Temperature swings from air conditioning to plant or outdoors;
  • Standard office environment in a temperature controlled office, with normal air contaminants, such as dust, typically found in an office setting. 
  • Exposure to fumes and odors of chemicals, gasses, dust and plant process, equipment noise, heights up to 130’, noise, extreme weather conditions, and areas where hazardous chemicals are present.
  • Position requires occasional, prolonged periods of standing and walking distances inside the plant. 
  • All employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to include FR clothing, gas detection equipment, noise/hearing protection, and safety glasses with side shields while in the manufacturing facilities. 
  • Type and read on a computer; communicate in person, on telephone, through written correspondence. May require standing, stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling.
  • Some travel required.
